(1) Properties
Among carbide-based ceramics, silicon carbide exhibits superior oxidation resistance. However, within the temperature range of 1000 °C to 1140 °C, its oxidation rate in air increases significantly. Additionally, silicon carbide is susceptible to decomposition when exposed to molten alkalis.
These ceramics also demonstrate high chemical stability, combined with considerable mechanical strength and excellent thermal shock resistance.
The electrical volume resistivity of silicon carbide remains relatively stable across temperatures ranging from 1000 °C to 1500 °C. This property makes it suitable for use in resistive heating elements. Silicon carbide heating resistors are also referred to as thermistors or semiconductor resistors. It is important to note that the resistivity of different types of silicon carbide thermistors varies with temperature.
