Zirconia for High-Temperature Applications

Are you searching for a ceramic material capable of operating at temperatures above 1500°C — or even exceeding 2000°C? At Innovacera, we offer a solution designed specifically for such demanding environments: MSZ zirconia ceramic, commonly referred to as yellow zirconia due to its distinctive appearance.

This material consists primarily of approximately 95% zirconium oxide (ZrO₂), with around 2% magnesium oxide (MgO) as a stabilizing additive. The inclusion of MgO significantly alters the material’s properties compared to conventional white zirconia ceramics, which are typically dense, non-porous, and recommended for service temperatures below 1000°C. In contrast, MSZ zirconia is engineered for substantially higher temperature performance.

Magnesium-Stabilized-Zirconia-Ceramic

We provide two grades of yellow zirconia to suit different application requirements:

  • High-density grade: 5.3–5.5 g/cm³ with porosity ≤5%
  • Lower-density grade: 4.8–5.2 g/cm³ with porosity ≤12%

Please note that density and porosity values are given as ranges rather than fixed figures, as they may vary depending on the manufacturing process. Available forming methods include casting, dry pressing, and isostatic pressing, with cost differences corresponding to the selected production technique.

Here is the material data sheet:

Material Properties Item Units MSZ-L MSZ-H
Composition ZrO2 % ≥95 ≥95
Al2O3 % ≤0.2 ≤0.2
SiO2 % ≤0.4 ≤0.4
MgO % ≤2.9 ≤2.9
Fe2O3 % ≤0.1 ≤0.1
TiO2 % ≤0.1 ≤0.1
Physical Color Yellow Yellow
Density g/cm3 4.8-5.2 5.3-5.5
Porosity % ≤12 ≤5

For applications operating in atmospheric conditions at temperatures above 1500°C, MSZ zirconia is often an excellent choice. For vacuum, high-vacuum, or inert gas environments, materials from the boron nitride (BN) family may also be worth considering.

Key Advantages

  • Excellent wear and erosion resistance
  • Strong resistance to molten metal corrosion at elevated temperatures
  • High mechanical strength
  • Extended service life
